The History and Origins of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been around for centuries, dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. These cultures used essential oils for a variety of purposes, including religious rituals, cosmetic treatments, and medicinal remedies.

Aromatherapy as we know it today, however, was first coined in the 20th century by a French chemist named René-Maurice Gattefossé. He discovered the healing properties of lavender essential oil after burning his hand in a laboratory accident and finding that lavender oil helped to heal the burn without scarring.

The practice of aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils extracted from plants, which can then be inhaled, applied topically, or even ingested in some cases*.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and contain the natural chemical compounds of the plant, which can have a powerful effect on the body and mind. Different oils have different properties, with some being energizing, while others are calming or anti-inflammatory.

How Aromatherapy Works

The power of essential oils in aromatherapy lies in their ability to interact with the olfactory system in the brain. When we inhale the aroma of an essential oil, the molecules enter the nose and attach to the olfactory receptors, which send signals to the brain’s limbic system. This part of the brain is responsible for emotions, memories, and regulating the autonomic nervous system.

Have you ever caught a whiff of a specific smell, like fresh baked cookies, and been instantly transported back to another place and time? That’s one example of the effect that scent can have on the memory centre of the brain.

Essential oils can trigger various responses in the limbic system, such as reducing stress and anxiety, promoting relaxation, and improving mood. Some oils, such as rosemary, can even improve cognitive function and increase alertness.

When using aromatherapy jewelry, the essential oils are released slowly throughout the day, offering a consistent and gentle effect on the body and mind. By wearing a piece of jewelry infused with essential oils, you can experience the benefits of aromatherapy throughout the day, wherever you go.

How to choose the right essential oil

When it comes to choosing the right scent for your aromatherapy jewelry, it’s important to consider what you’re hoping to achieve with the essential oils. Different scents can have varying effects on the body and mind, so it’s essential to choose a scent that aligns with your goals.

For example, lavender is a popular scent for promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, while rosemary can provide mental clarity and focus. Juniper is known for its cleansing and purifying properties, making it a great choice for those looking to refresh their mindset.

You can also consider the season, as certain scents can be more fitting for different times of the year. Warm and spicy scents like cinnamon and clove are often associated with the fall and winter months, while fresh and floral scents like citrus or jasmine can be perfect for spring and summer.

Another option is to create a mix of oils that complement each other. The oils you choose should blend nicely not only in scent but also in purpose. For example, if you want to feel invigorated, you wouldn’t mix an energizing scent like lemon with a more sedative scent like lavender but rather with something like rosemary for focus.

Making your own oil blends allows for the creation of customized aromatherapy oils that can provide a variety of benefits based on your needs. Mixing oils is an excellent way to combine the benefits of multiple oils into one powerful blend.

Ultimately, the scent you choose for your aromatherapy jewelry should align with your personal preferences, as well as your desired outcome. It’s important to remember that the benefits of aromatherapy are subjective. The same scent that relaxes one person may have the opposite effect on someone else. Experiment with different scents and methods of use to find what works best for you and your unique needs.

Once you’ve found the perfect scent for your needs, you can incorporate it into your daily routine with your jewelry to experience the full benefits of aromatherapy throughout the day.

How to use aromatherapy jewelry

To use essential oils with your aromatherapy jewelry, all you need to do is apply the oil directly to the lava stone. Simply put a few drops of your favorite oil onto the stone and allow it to absorb before putting on your jewelry.

As the necklace hangs around your neck, the essential oils will slowly diffuse, allowing you to inhale the oil’s aroma all day long. When you find the aroma has faded, take off your necklace and apply another few drops of oil to the lava bead.

If you find the essential oils are too strong, they can be diluted with a carrier oil. Most vegetable oils will do fine but my favourites are jojoba, grape seed, and apricot kernel. These oils are light enough to absorb into the lava bead and fairly odourless, allowing the scent of the essential oils to be front and centre.

To switch scents, you’ll need to clean your lava bead before applying a new oil. Submerge your lava bead in a bowl of warm, soapy water. Give it a little rub, allow it to dry fully, and you’re ready to go.

Remember that undiluted essential oils are powerful compounds. Never use undiluted oils directly on your skin and make sure to keep them away from children and pets.

The use of undiluted essential oils can cause skin irritation – use caution when applying oil to the necklace and discontinue use immediately if you develop a rash.

Incorporating Aromatherapy into Your Daily Life with Jewelry

Once you’ve got your aromatherapy jewelry, it’s time to start using it to enhance your daily life. The easiest way to incorporate aromatherapy into your routine is just to put on your jewelry in the morning before starting your day. The scent will slowly diffuse throughout the day, allowing you to experience the benefits of aromatherapy while going about your normal activities, keeping you energized, alert, or relaxed.

Another way to use aromatherapy jewelry is during yoga or meditation sessions. By wearing your jewelry during these activities, you can help enhance focus, clarity, and relaxation. Simply inhaling the scent of your chosen essential oil as you move through your practice can be incredibly soothing and grounding.

Using the same oil every time you meditate or perform other rituals can also help you to be in the right mindset. By repeatedly using a specific scent with a particular action, it creates a feedback loop in the brain that connects the scent to the ritual. Once the connection is established in your mind, even just a whiff of that same essential oil will bring you back to the mindset you were in during your meditation or ritual.

You can use this brain trick to your advantage by creating a ritual around a specific intention (like staying calm during stressful situations), then wear the same scent in your aromatherapy jewelry as a reminder all day long.
