March Birthstone: Aquamarine

The march birthstone is aquamarine, a reminder of the mysterious beauty of the ocean. Its spectrum of shades, from deep green-blue to light and slightly greenish blue, bring to mind a crystal-clear sea. The clarity of the gemstone is a symbol of purity and peace of mind. Wear aquamarine and be reminded of the power of the sea and the serenity of the spirit.

In addition to being the birthstone for March, aquamarine is also the traditional gemstone for the 19th wedding anniversary and the one of the zodiac stones for Scorpio (along with the rest of the Beryl family).

Aquamarine Birthstone History

Aquamarine is named for the latin aqua marina (meaning sea water) and anybody who sees this soft blue stone can understand why.

The ancient mariners believed that aquamarine could bring peace and safety to the seas. It was said that it would bring joy in marriage and protection against enemies in battle and in court. Furthermore, it was thought to give the wearer courage and charm, and to sharpen their intellect. Wearing Beryl was considered to be a powerful talisman, bestowing upon the wearer an unconquerable spirit and unbeatable wisdom.

Aquamarine Birthstone Meaning

Like the cool, flowing waters of the ocean it’s named for, aquamarine inspires the calm, rational flow of communication.

It is a stone of cleansing, trust and inner release.

Aquamarine’s soothing, compassionate energy fosters truthfulness and reason, encouraging harmonious interactions with even those with the most confrontational of natures.

Aquamarine birthstone Properties

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family, which also includes emerald and morganite.

Aquamarine is a breathtaking gemstone that can range from a light, barely discernible color to a vibrant, bold blue. It is the name given to beryl minerals that possess a range of hues from greenish blue to blue. No matter the tone or saturation, it is always referred to as aquamarine.

With a Mohs hardness of 7.5-8, aquamarine is more durable than some of the other gemstones on the birthstone list. That makes it suitable for most jewelry applications – including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings.

Though it resists scratching, aquamarine is a brittle stone so it can be susceptible to chips and nicks. Choosing a more protective setting like a bezel rather than prongs will prevent breakage to any sharp corners from impacts.

Aquamarine birthstone Care

Aquamarine is very easy to care for. Soaking in a bit of warm, soapy water before brushing with a clean, soft bristled brush, is all that’s needed to keep your aquamarine sparkling and beautiful.

For a deeper cleaning, you can use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and steam cleaning is also usually safe as long as the gem has no fractures or inclusions.

Store your aquamarine jewelry in a soft pouch or lined box taking care not to let it rub against harder gemstones such as diamond or ruby.
